Internet Shopping vs High Street Shopping – Which is Best?

When you think about shopping, do you think of shopping in the high street or Internet shopping as your preferred medium? There are of course, disadvantages and advantages to each but which option is better overall? This could all depend upon on your personal preference or what is the most appropriate for purchasing goods at a given time. This can also be affected by availability. Some goods could only be available either from a physical shop or online.

Twenty four hour convenience

In today’s hectic 24 hour society when all things are driven by availability and time the world wide web can be an invaluable source when used appropriately. When a considerable amount of people seem to have a distinct lack of time, the Internet is regularly used for buying goods. It can also be a valuable starting point if a consumer is looking for information but looking to actually buy a product in a shop or at a physical place instead of online. A good instance of this is purchasing a car. Often information is searched for regarding possible purchases online but then the actual sale comes from a dealership. This is also true of buying property. Information can normally be gleaned from a property website or an estate agency in advance but the actual purchase is made on the high street. The Internet can also be good if you do not have much time. If you know precisely what you are looking for, need something quickly but do not have enough time to go to high street shops during your standard working week, you can order something online and it can arrive the next day.

Ordering online can save time

It can clearly be beneficial to do a proportion of your shopping on the Internet. For instance, you could save at least one hour every week if you select your food shopping online and have it delivered to your home address. The only downside to this is the fee taken for the delivery every time you have it delivered. The purchase of items like CDs and books online can also save time. In many cases items such as these can also be cheaper to purchase online than on the high street. The Internet can also be a invaluable resource for the research and the purchase of non-everyday items such as sex toys, birthday or Christmas gifts and jewellery. Online banking can also be a far more convenient way of transferring money from one account to another than going into a building society or a high street bank.

The advantages of the high street

If you have the time to have a good look around, the high street can be a better option. If you buy clothing from the high street, trying the items on in a changing room prior to purchasing ensures that the articles of clothing fit correctly. If you are purchasing clothing online, unless you have exactly the same item in your possession, you can’t guarantee that it will fit. If you buy the item online from a reputable online retailer and it does not fit you can of course send it back and in most instances exchange or refund it. If however you want to surprise a loved one with some sexy lingerie, as long as you are aware of what size they take, then either online or the high street should work equally as well. Whatever you want or need to purchase as a consumer, the high street offers the advantage of allowing you to view the actual product whether it be a CD, a book, shoes or clothing etcetera. The high street is also highly convenient if you want to quickly buy a sandwich and/or a drink from a cafe or a newsagent and take it away with you. It also acts as a place to browse. For instance, you may want to buy a new electrical item like a TV and have seen it at a less expensive price online but want to see it in the flesh beforehand. As previously mentioned, this is also the case for the Internet.

Overall there are advantages and disadvantages to buying goods online or from the high street. If you are time restricted for whatever reason, the Internet can be more convenient. Nonetheless, if you have time to browse and wish to view the goods before you buy them, the high street can be more enjoyable. Essentially it is dependent on personal preference as to what works the best for the individual.

I think the item being bought helps to make the decision of whether to buy online or in a store. Buying various media (movies, songs, books, etc.) can easily be bought and downloaded right online whereas something like clothes, as you pointed out, can be more difficult because of the sizes of things. However, even with clothes, companies like Zappos are boosting customer service to such an extent that people can feel confident that they are not stuck with something that doesn’t fit. I think the overall trend is to buy things online more and more. I think it ends up being in the best interest of both the companies (who can save money by not having retail stores) and for customers (who don’t have to spend gas money, as much time, and even sometimes less money for buying online). Online is a win-win for everyone and I think e-commerce is where everything is going.
