I think the item being bought helps to make the decision of whether to buy online or in a store. Buying various media (movies, songs, books, etc.) can easily be bought and downloaded right online whereas something like clothes, as you pointed out, can be more difficult because of the sizes of things. However, even with clothes, companies like Zappos are boosting customer service to such an extent that people can feel confident that they are not stuck with something that doesn't fit. I think the overall trend is to buy things online more and more. I think it ends up being in the best interest of both the companies (who can save money by not having retail stores) and for customers (who don't have to spend gas money, as much time, and even sometimes less money for buying online). Online is a win-win for everyone and I think e-commerce is where everything is going.
